India has achieved a remarkable milestone with the successful completion of India’s first 50-inch diameter horizontal directional drilling (HDD) to till date.
Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) has successfully completed the Atharabanki River crossing (50-inch) as part of its ambitious Numaligarh Refinery Expansion Project (NREP) on dated 1710.2025. The project involves the construction of a 1,635 km cross-country crude oil pipeline from Paradip Port in Odisha to Numaligarh, Assam, along with a significant expansion of the refinery’s capacity.

India has achieved a remarkable engineering milestone with the successful completion of India’s first 50-inch Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) project ever undertaken in the country. Spanning an impressive 50-inch diameter, 685 meters in length, and reaching a depth of 18 meters in 47 days beneath the Atharabanki River, this record-breaking installation forms a crucial part of the Paradip Numaligarh Crude Oil Pipeline (PNCPL).
A collaborative team comprising NRL, Engineers India Limited (EIL), and Ace Energy Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd. accomplished this remarkable feat by safely and successfully pulling back a 50-inch diameter pipeline section beneath the Atharabanki River in Odisha.
This achievement highlights the increasing importance of HDD technology in undertaking complex and environmentally sensitive infrastructure projects.
Why HDD technology?
Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) technology was selected for this project due to its ability to navigate challenging terrains while minimizing environmental impact. The HDD process involves drilling a pilot bore from one side of the river to the other, which is then progressively enlarged to accommodate the required pipeline size.
